Our app funding campaign on appbackr for the Android app version of The Chronic Argonauts has just concluded, and the results far exceeded my expectations. Funding reached a total amount of $1,117!

I want to thank all of our “backrs” for their support. Their generous sharing has really made this app possible.

The Android app is fully functional thanks to the help of a great programmer. There are two versions of the app that will be deployed:
(1) The premium $0.99 version that includes the full graphic novel and a copy of H.G. Wells’ original short story from 1888.
(2) A free version that includes the first chapter to whet the appetites of potential buyers. The free version also includes an in-app purchasing mechanism for quick and easy upgrades to the premium version.

As the campaign far surpassed the minimum funding goal of $700, I am currently working with some freelancers to enhance the apps with an animated menu to make them even more special. After some final testing, I expect the apps to go live within the next couple of weeks. As we get closer, I’ll post some screenshots and vdeo.

Also on the horizon are versions for Apple iPad, Amazon Kindle Fire, Barnes & Noble Nook Color/Tablet, and more! Since this appbackr campaign was so successful, I might just have to do another for the iPad version.

In what is one of the more unique and enticing crowdsourcing platforms I’ve come across, appbackr allows ‘Backrs‘ to ‘purchase’ apps at a wholesale price, giving developers immediate funding to finish their app. When the purchased copies are downloaded in retail app stores, the developer receives an additional payment and the Backrs profit. Their economics diagram helps explain this process:

With THE CHRONIC ARGONAUTS app, Backrs purchase the apps at the wholesale price of $0.35 each. When the apps are purchased in the Android Marketplace (or other digital marketplace), those Backrs will be paid back at a rate of $0.54 for each app. That’s a 54% profit!

I’ve backed the RED FOG Nazi Zombie graphic novel project and I highly encourage you to do so as well. You can gain some cool rewards by doing so. As of right now, the project is 70% to its goal with less than three weeks left. As someone who will be attempting to gain some extra funds through crowdfunding for our own graphic novel project, it would be great to see others succeed with the model.

I am thinking about starting a new Kickstarter campaign for some funds to help with our new H.G. Wells comic project. Seeing as how our last Kickstarter attempt (for Vampire Apocalypse  – seen HERE), was unsuccessful, I’d like to get some feedback about what could be done to get you (and multiple others) to help to participate.  Take a look at some of the other comic projects on Kickstarter for comparisons.

1. What about the Vampire Apocalypse Kickstarter project is good?
2. What about it is bad?
3. What do you like/dislike about other Kickstarter projects?
4. What sort of ‘Pledge Rewards’ would you like to see?
5. How much would you consider pledging?
6. What would get you to pledge more?
7. What would get you to share the project with your friends, family, and strangers?

Your feedback is greatly appreciated and will be helpful as I look into setting up another campaign.  Funds received would be used to help offset some of the costs in the production of the book, as well as to bring members of the creative team together for a book launch at one of the major comic conventions in later 2011.
